Fathima Begum lives in Hyderabad with her family. Fathima’s favourite colour is purple and she likes to dance with her friends. When she grows up, Fathima wants to be a teacher. Fathima’s father works at a welding shop. Sadly, he recently suffered a heart attack and cannot work as much as he did before due to his poor health. When he does work he only manages to earn about 300 rupees a day. On average, Fathima’s father earns 6,000 rupees each month – that’s only $120 CAD. Fathima’s mother started working from home, slicing areca nut after her husband’s heart attack, but barely earns 40 rupees a day, which is less than $1 CAD. Fathima’s family lives in single room which they rent for 3,000 rupees each month. They are forced to share a washroom with more than 20 other people. The ceiling of their home is made out of tin. Fathima’s parents want her to have a better life, but they are not sure how much longer they will be able to pay her tuition. Fathima’s dream is to become a teacher and help others.
